The Mavericks, who had already clinched the Area 4 Southern Division title, will play the No. 1 seed from the Northern Division on Sunday. The winner earns the top seed to the state tournament held at Sunset High in Beaverton on Aug. 2. The loser will take the No. 2 seed to the tournament.

Bedortha gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out seven to improve to 11-0 as the Mavericks slipped by for a 5-2 victory in Game 1. North Medford completed the sweep with a 9-4 triumph in the nightcap.

The Mavericks (40-8, 25-3 Area 4) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 1 to pull away from a 2-all tie. Corey Nelson keyed the rally with a push-bunt single with runners on the corners that scored the second run of the frame.

Hayden Wolfe and Blake Mitchell each went 2-for-3 to lead the Mavericks in the contest.

Sharif Young improved to 10-2 with a pitching win in Game 2.

Young picked up plenty of offensive support, with Mitchell going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Chris Bradshaw batting 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.

David Wardle led Grants Pass with two hits.

ASHLAND PILOTS 11-11, KLAMATH FALLS HAWKS 1-1 — At Ashland, Garrett Tygerson and Sam Gaviglio each homered in a six-run third inning to help Ashland secure a win in Game 2 and complete the Area 4 sweep.

The victories locked up the No. 2 seed from the Area 4 Southern Division. The Pilots (26-10, 20-8 Area 4) will play the No. 2 team from the Northern Division on Sunday, with the winner advancing to the state tournament as the league's third seed.

Tygerson ripped a three-run homer and Gaviglio came up two batters later with a man on and belted a two-run blast. The two players combined for four hits and eight RBIs in the nightcap.

In Game 1, Hayden Miller was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Luke Jannusch also drove in three runs to lead the Pilots.

Charlie Sebrell needed only 51 pitches in the five-inning contest to run his pitching record to 7-2. Tygerson (5-1) was the winner in the second game.

GRANTS PASS MINERS 7-6, NORTH JACKSON EAGLES 4-4 — At Eagle Point, Grants Pass scored five runs in the sixth inning of Game 2 to pull out a win and complete the Area 4 doubleheader sweep in the regular season finale for both teams on Tuesday at The Yard.

North Jackson led 3-0 entering the sixth but Grants Pass took advantage of four walks and two errors by the Eagles to jump ahead for good.

Brian Smith suffered the loss despite shutting out the Miners for the first five innings.

Dennis Clifford and Scott Erickson each went 2-for-4 to lead North Jackson, while Mike Suthann went 2-for-3 with a run to pace the Miners.

In the opener, Grants Pass pitcher Eli Habermann struck out 10 and gave up two earned runs in a complete-game effort.

North Jackson plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't get any closer.

The Eagles finish the season 11-25 overall and 7-21 in league play.

Little League

AGE 11-12 STATE TOURNAMENT — At Portland, Bend scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie the game, then pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a 6-5 victory over Medford National Central in a pool play game at the nine-team tournament.

District 8 champion Medford (1-2) will play Centennial tonight at 6:30 in the final game of pool play action. Medford must win and hope for a victory by Lake Oswego to clinch a spot in bracket play.

Starting pitcher Joe Cooney struck out nine in 32/3 innings for Medford. He also went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, one of those coming on a solo home run.

Ben Casebier added to the Medford attack with two hits in as many at-bats.
