A request that Ashland's police department be able to use drug-seizure money for training comes before the Ashland City Council tonight.

The council meets at 7 p.m. in council chambers at the Civic Center at 1175 E. Main St. The meeting is open to the public.

As a member of the federal Drug Enforcement Agency regional drug task force, Ashland is entitled to a percentage of assets seized in criminal apprehensions with which it assisted. It collected $194,000 through the program in 2006, and $318,000 total since 2000.

Police Chief Terry Holderness asked for permission to use $66,900 of the money for training officers in "problem-oriented policing and leadership," according to a staff report.
