MEDFORD — An 8-year-old Medford boy suffered serious head injuries Thursday afternoon after he was struck by a car while trying to cross Crater Lake Avenue near Forest Hills Drive.

MEDFORD — An 8-year-old Medford boy suffered serious head injuries Thursday afternoon after he was struck by a car while trying to cross Crater Lake Avenue near Forest Hills Drive.

Wyatt Chase Matthews, of the 3100 block of Forest Hills Drive, was accompanied by his older sisters, ages 15 and 11, when he was struck by a 1998 Mercury Tracer while crossing the busy avenue shortly before 12:30 p.m.

He was transported by Mercy Flights ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center and was set to be flown to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland Thursday evening.

Medford police reported he was in "extremely critical" condition.

The driver of the northbound vehicle, 19-year-old Jessica Genevive Hummel of Talent, was not hurt. No citations have been issued, and the investigation is continuing.
