Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a two-alarm blaze that destroyed an empty house in the 900 block of Suncrest Road early this morning.

A driver on Interstate 5 spotted the flames and made the first 9-1-1 call reporting the fire at about 3 a.m., Jackson County Fire District No. 5 Capt. Jim Campbell said.

The first firefighters to arrive found the unoccupied house engulfed by flames, he said. Phoenix Fire Department and Ashland Fire and Rescue assisted District 5 crews and Medford Fire Department brought a water tanker to the scene of the fire, officials said. Other fire departments around the Rogue Valley also were activated to move up and protect other districts.

Crews remained at the house fire when they got another call at 4:38 a.m. today reporting a truck fire at milepost 5 of Interstate 5 south of Ashland. A car-hauler carrying nine vehicles caught fire and "burned rather well," Campbell said. District 5 firefighters were joined by crews from Colestin Valley Fire Department, and Oregon and California departments of forestry.

They saved five of the nine vehicles on the trailer, Campbell said.
