About a third of Jackson County schools failed to meet academic and attendance standards set out in the federal No Child Left Behind law during the 2006-07 school year, according to a preliminary state report.

The Mail Tribune plans a full story on the report in Friday's paper, but school-by-school information is available today on the Web site maintained by the state Department of Education. A brief version also is available below.

The so-called Adequate Yearly Progress reports measure how well schools do at meeting standards outlined as part of the federal law.

For a school to meet the requirements, 50 percent of students must meet state reading standards and 49 percent must meet math standards. One hundred percent must be proficient in state assessments by 2014, according to federal law.

Schools that repeatedly miss benchmarks can face withdrawal of federal funding for low-income students.
