Medford police are investigating a report that two men stole a golf cart parked at the Rogue Valley Country Club and took it for a reckless joyride across the fifth fairway before abandoning it.

Two golfers reported the careening cart at about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday to club security and police, Medford police Lt. Tim Doney said. The $9,000 cart was found abandoned on the course a short time later.

Investigators determined that the owner had parked it outside the clubhouse with other carts and gone to a dinner inside that was part of the Southern Oregon Golf Tournament. Then, two men apparently took the cart.

Two other golfers saw them and even spoke with them briefly and thought they looked suspicious, Doney said. As they drove off in opposite directions, the golfers decided the other men were reckless and contacted security and police.

One suspect was described as a man in his late 20s with a slender build, buzz-cut dark hair, lots of earrings and a heavy-metal rocker look, police said. The other was described as a man in his early 20s with dark hair and a clean-cut look.

Police ask anyone with information about the theft and joyride to contact officer Shannon Reynolds at 618-1897.
