Jackson County Commissioner C.W. Smith is back on the job as he recovers from recent surgery to remove a soft-tissue sarcoma in his right shoulder.

Smith said doctors at Oregon Health & Science University told him they believe they got all the cancer, but he will still have to undergo radiation treatment as a precaution.

The surgery required a foot-long incision to remove the golf-ball sized mass of this relatively rare type of cancer.

"The prognosis looks good," said Smith.
