JACKSONVILLE — A 51-year-old Jacksonville man died Tuesday afternoon after his car collided with a dump truck on Highway 238, police said.

Donald R. Smith was driving his 1986 Suzuki Samurai on Highway 238 just west of Jacksonville when for unknown reasons his car crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a dump truck, Oregon State Police said in a news release.

The Suzuki sustained severe front end damage. The impact left the highway strewn with debris. Smith's car came to rest partially off the highway.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unknown whether he was wearing a seatbelt.

The dump truck driver William B. Brunston, 61, of Darby, Mont., was not injured, OSP said.

The highway was closed to one lane for two and a half hours while investigators and road crews cleared the scene.

An OSP investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing. An OSP crash recreation team worked well into the evening trying to determine the cause.

OSP troopers were assisted at the scene by Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Oregon Department of Transportation crews and the Applegate Fire District.
