James R. "Jim" Bartelt



James R. "Jim" Bartelt passed away on October 11, 2007 at his home in Vancouver, Wash. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at Adams Chapel in River View Cemetery in Portland, Ore.



Jim was born April 25, 1927 in Amarillo, Texas to parents Winfrey and Gladys Bartelt. He came to Ashland as an infant, and graduated from Ashland High School in 1944. He first married Marjorie Wells, who he later divorced. Later, he married Darlene Roginson Chappel. He was a veteran of WWII, and fought in the U.S. Army. After the war, he worked in sporting goods sales. In his career, he represented well-regarded brands such as Rawlings, Wilson, and Adidas.



Jim loved sports. He played varsity basketball for the University of Oregon for three years in college.



He is survived by his wife, Darlene; sons, Jeff and Steve Bartelt; step-daughter, Kim Castling; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Van Zante in 2006.
