KLAMATH FALLS — Phoenix High had plenty of contributors Saturday afternoon during the Skyline Conference cross country district meet.

The Pirates' girls team won the meet, with four runners finishing in the top 10. The Phoenix boys, led by Elliott Jantzer's individual win, took second to Hidden Valley.

The top two teams and the top four individuals not affiliated with those winning teams advance to the state meet held next weekend at Lane Community College in Eugene.

The Phoenix girls (35 points) edged out Hidden Valley (43).

"This is considered the best girls team we've had in school history," said Phoenix coach John Cornett. "We were sitting in second going into the meet with Hidden Valley looking pretty dominant. That's what's great about this (Phoenix) girls team. It truly was a team effort."

Anne Hagy led the charge with a second-place finish in 19 minutes, 39 seconds. The senior finished in under 20 minutes for the first time.

Also for the Phoenix girls, Jordi Hurd was fourth (19:47), Kayla Heath was sixth (20:11) and Sarah Hagy was seventh (20:16).

Henley's Taylor Wallace easily outdistanced Hagy to win the girls event with a time of 17:50.

"That (running under 18 minutes) is a rarity in girls cross country," said Cornett. "That time is approaching national rankings. That's how good that young lady was today."

Jantzer eclipsed his lifetime best by two seconds and was just one second off the school record with a time of 15:39.

Phoenix's No. 2 runner, Dan Engle, ran a 16:58 to take fifth and finish under 17 minutes for the first time.

The state meet will be held next weekend at Lane Community College in Eugene.
