CENTRAL POINT — Southern Oregon University wrestler Marcus Moore won the championship of the heavyweight division Saturday at the Best in the West tournament at Jackson County Expo Park.

Moore is a junior transfer from Sierra College.

Teammate Ricky Farrell, a sophomore from Phoenix, placed second at 174 pounds, and junior Seth Roy, a transfer Clackamas Community College, was second at 149.

The open tournament pitted the NAIA No.8-ranked Raiders against opponents ranging from unattached amateurs to NCAA Division I foes.

Raider coach Mike Ritchey was pleased with his team's performance.

"I thought we had a really good showing," he said. "Assuming Trevor (Lofstedt) would've been in the mix at 125, we would've been in the finals in four weights. So as tough as the tournament was, I think it was a good solid showing."

Lofstedt didn't participate so he could wrestle in an all-star event in Eugene Monday.

Moore defeated Travis Gardner of Oregon State, 3-1, in the semifinals, then downed Boise State's Nick Smith 8-3 for the title.

On Roy's road to second, he defeated SOU's Tommie Hooper by a point in the quarterfinals, North Idaho College's Tim McGoldrick 4-2 in the semifinals and lost to Adam Hall of Boise State, 9-8, in the championship.

After a first-round bye and an overtime victory in the second round, Farrell faced a gauntlet of three Oregon State wrestlers. He beat Brandon Perkins 11-1 in the quarters, Neil Beaudry 4-2 in the semis, then was pinned by Chris Platt.

SOU junior Chase Locke finished fourth at 184.
