3/4 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
11/2 cups, plus 1 tablespoon flour, divided
2 eggs
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnut or pecans work well)
1/2 cup coconut flakes

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Using a pastry blender or mixer, blend together the butter, sugar and 11/2 cups of the flour. Press mixture evenly into bottom of an ungreased 9-by-13-inch pan. Bake for 12 minutes.

Mix the remaining ingredients, including the 1 tablespoon flour, in a small bowl. Spread mixture over hot, baked pastry. Bake 20 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.

Makes about 32 (11/2-by-2-inch) bars.
