Six local Soroptimist clubs are accepting applications for their annual Women's Opportunity Awards.

The awards give financial help to women seeking to improve their lives by gaining additional skills, training and education. The program helps women who are the primary source of financial support for their families.

Recipients may use the cash awards to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, including books, childcare and transportation. There are 11 awards available locally, ranging in size from $2,000 to $500. Some club level recipients become eligible for additional cash awards at other levels, including three $10,000 finalists. Two Rogue Valley women won awards at the regional level last year. To read their stories, visit the Soroptimist Web site at www.SoroptimistRV.org.

Eligible applicants must be enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program.

Applications are available at Rogue Community College's counseling offices in Medford and Grants Pass, Southern Oregon University's Women's Studies Department, Jackson County Parole and Probation offices, Jackson County Vocational Rehabilitation office, Crater Lake Electrical Joint Apprentice and Training, Community Works and the Department of Human Services
