LAKE OSWEGO — The North Medford boys basketball team got a chance to stretch its legs on Wednesday against Southridge, the highest-scoring Class 6A team in the state.

And the Black Tornado nearly out-gunned the high-flying Skyhawks before a buzzer-beating shot did in North in a 92-90 loss in double overtime at the eight-team Lakeridge Tournament.

A Danny Berger 3-pointer tied the game at 90-all with under 10 seconds to play in the second OT, but Southridge's Juan Zuniga drilled an 18-footer at the other end as the horn sounded to give the Skyhawks their eighth win in nine games. It was only Zuniga's second made field goal of the game.

"We had our chances," said Tornado coach Scott Plankenhorn. "We didn't solidify ourselves from the free-throw line late and we turned it over a couple times. But (Southridge) made the plays. (Zuniga) came down and calmly stepped right into that shot and sank it."

Jordan Ellis led North Medford with 25 points, while Berger had 21 and Josh Pecktol added 18.

Kevin Sullivan, a 6-foot-4 junior post, led all scorers with 42 points before fouling out.

The Skyhawks entered the game averaging just under 80 points per contest.

North trailed 45-40 at the half but used a 17-11 burst in the third quarter to climb ahead.

"We knew it would be a high-scoring game because they like to run and so do we," said Plankenhorn. "They're all about spacing the floor, penetrating and dishing and shooting the 3. And I thought we did a decent job of defending them at times in the second half."

"It's a tough one to lose," added Plankenhorn, "but it's definitely a step in the right direction. We still have to figure out how to rebound and defend all of the time."

North Medford takes on either Lakeridge or Glencoe today at 4:30 p.m.
