The St. Mary's girls erupted for 30 points in the third quarter and cruised to a 79-41 win over Tulelake on Thursday in the first round of the A.G. Edwards Christmas Classic basketball tournament at The Pavilion.

Tulelake had inched within 26-20 by halftime to get the attention of the Crusaders (9-2).

"We came in after halftime and really pressured them," said St. Mary's assistant coach Jolyn Marshall. "We had a ton of layins and were fast-breaking them. We played great."

Veronica Valdez scored a season-high 22 points to lead four Crusaders in double figures. Kelsey Gross had 14, Nikki Steinsiek 12 and Whitney Adderson 11.

Adderson was particularly strong, said Marshall.

"She played great defense, rebounded well as a guard, pushed the ball and made great outlet passes," said the coach. "She had a really solid overall game."

ROGUE RIVER 57, HELENA CHRISTIAN 46 — Junior guard Shawna Turnham and senior wing Angie Caschera had 16 points each to lead Rogue River (4-4) over Helena Christian (Mont.) in the first round of the A.G. Edwards Christmas Classic at St. Mary's gym.

Rogue River coach Dave Ehrhardt said it was the best offensive performance of the season for his team, which came in averaging around 35 points per game.

Senior 6-foot center Shawna Hamre, returning from the flu, had five rebounds and five blocks in limited minutes for Rogue River. Senior post Alicia Updegraff led the Chieftains with six rebounds.

Gloria Cox led Helena Christian with a game-high 18 points.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 56, BONANZA 39 — Cascade Christian's bench outscored Bonanza's 34-11, helping lead the Challengers (5-4) to the victory at The Pavilion in the A.G. Edwards Christmas Classic.

Becca Sellers scored 19 and Aleena Cesaro had 13 off the bench for Cascade Christian, which led 18-5 after the first quarter before Bonanza climbed back into the game in the second and third. The Challengers pulled away with another 18-point effort in the fourth quarter.

Addie Gallagher had a team-high 10 points for Bonanza and Victoria Rivera had nine.

The Challengers take on Lakeview tonight at 5:30 while Bonanza enters the consolation bracket and will face North Valley at 6:30 p.m.
