The St. Mary's boys basketball team finally looked poised to take control of the game when sophomore Lou Gambee connected on a 3-pointer with 2:20 to play in the fourth quarter, giving the Crusaders their first lead against Helena Christian.

But in less than 30 seconds, the lead was gone, and Helena Christian mounted a comeback of its own to claim a 51-48 victory in the semifinals of the unlimited division bracket of the A.G. Edwards Christmas Classic on Friday.

Gambee's trey broke a 45-all tie and St. Mary's (6-4) attempted to inbound the ball after Helena Christian turned it over on its subsequent possession. But Helena Christian's Jake Spearson stole the inbounds pass and, in one fluid motion, hit a turn-around jumper to cut the lead to one.

Cade Foster then forced a steal and passed to Kevin Foster for a layin, giving Helena Christian the lead right back with 55 seconds remaining.

"We were up by one, and I was in the middle of calling to go into our delay game," St. Mary's coach Rick Jackson said. "As soon as I called it, we tried to split a double team and they popped the ball out."

Helena Christian connected on two free throws with six seconds remaining, after St. Mary's failed to get the lead on its possession, and the Crusaders' shot at the buzzer missed its mark.

Helena Christian jumped to an early 9-0 lead and led throughout until Gambee's 3-pointer in the fourth. Kevin Foster led Helena Christian with 19 points and Cade Foster added 10.

Andrew Larson had 13 points for St. Mary's, while Max O'Sullivan added 12 and Gambee finished with 11.
