A Central Point police officer and his passenger died in a car crash in Northern California this morning.

Willie Mott, 33, of Central Point, was driving southbound on Interstate 5 in Yreka, Calif., at about 7:30 a.m. today when he lost control of his 2004 Dodge pick-up truck due to icy conditions, according to a California Highway Patrol press release. His passenger, Cordie Robinson, 31, of Spring Creek, Nev., also died.

According to the report, Mott's truck traveled across the median into traffic in the northbound lanes on I-5, into the path of a tractor-trailer combination. The tractor-trailer went off the road, down an embankment, across the south Yreka off-ramp, into the roadway and struck another vehicle. Those drivers sustained no injuries.
