COQUILLE — Illinois Valley got to the free-throw line 23 times in the fourth quarter and 34 times in the game to defeat Coquille 65-60 in a nonconference boys basketball game on Saturday.

Illinois Valley (6-3) made 14 of 23 from the stripe in the fourth quarter, led by Roger Hults, who made 5 of 7.

Coquille used a 20-12 run in the second quarter to rally from a 15-12 deficit.

In the second half, however, the Cougars put together a 16-11 burst to tie, then rode the hot free-throw shooting to pull out the victory.

Steven Paul had 19 points, William Crowl had 15, Hults added 12 and Kevin Snook had nine points and nine rebounds for Illinois Valley.

The Cougars open Skyline Conference play on Thursday against North Valley.

Jake Johnson had 11 points for Coquille.
