Until the starters found their rhythm, the St. Mary's bench was more than willing to pick up the slack for the fifth-ranked Crusaders on Saturday in a 46-38 girls basketball win over Chiloquin at St. Mary's High.

Until the starters found their rhythm, the St. Mary's bench was more than willing to pick up the slack for the fifth-ranked Crusaders on Saturday in a 46-38 girls basketball win over Chiloquin at St. Mary's High.

The victory keeps St. Mary's undefeated in Southern Cascade League play at 5-0 and 15-2 overall.

Chiloquin took an 8-0 lead to start the game and the St. Mary's starters were held scoreless in the first quarter. Katie Bates was the only starter to score in the first half but, thanks to the reserves led by Veronica Valdez, St. Mary's trailed just 24-20 at the break.

The Crusaders had 24 points from their reserve players in the game.

"Our bench came in and played strong," said St. Mary's assistant coach Jolyn Marshall. "(Valdez) came in and was the one who basically got us back in it. She had a great first half."

Valdez finished with 10 points and St. Mary's took control in the third quarter, outscoring Chiloquin (10-6, 2-3 SCL) 14-4 to take a 34-28 lead into the final quarter. Chiloquin's Dani Case had 12 points, including the Queens' only field goal in that third quarter.

The Queens managed to tie the game 38-38 with under two minutes to play but St. Mary's benefited from some clutch shooting down the stretch.

Nikki Steinsiek connected on two free throws and Kelsey Gross hit two more and four total in the quarter. Whitney Adderson also had a basket late in the game to push the Crusaders over the top.
