Schools, banks and some other businesses are closed, mail delivery is stopped and holiday events are planned in Ashland today for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The city's 20th annual celebration is set from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St. It's free and open to the public, which is encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to food banks.

The celebration includes songs, dances and dramatic performances by students from Ashland schools and Southern Oregon University, Oregon Shakespeare Festival actors and community groups.

OSF Artistic Director Bill Rauch will give a keynote speech.

All ages are welcome, but parents are urged to stay with their children during the event. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Seating is limited and available on a first-come basis.
