Scott Morse has spent most of his time on the basketball court since school began.

But the junior took a brief break from playing hoops for Cascade Christian High to win two titles Sunday in the Rogue Valley Swim and Tennis Club USTA Dual Level 5 tennis tournament. The event began Friday.

The unseeded Morse defeated third-seeded Spencer Moore, 6-4, 6-2, in the Boys 18 singles championship.

Morse also teamed with Medford's Austin Schoenlein to win the Boys 18 doubles title. Morse and Schoenlein beat Martin Jackson and David Tribble of Medford in the title match, 9-8.

It was an impressive display by Morse, a two-time high school singles state champion, because of the level at which he played despite little practice and because of the talented field he bested.

Morse, 16, was playing his first tournament in the 18-and-under division. He wasn't seeded because he hasn't been active on the junior circuit, but you wouldn't have known it by the results, particularly in singles.

Moore, who earlier knocked off the No. 1 seed en route to the finals, is an NCAA Division I-level player, said Frank Inn, the RVSTC director of tennis. So, too, was second-seeded, Simon Meske, whom Morse downed 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Meske, a high school senior, has committed to St. Mary's College.

In all, Morse won four matches.

"That's a pretty good run of matches," said Inn. "He beat some pretty good players, and these guys have been playing a lot of tennis, and he hasn't been playing that much. He's been hitting with us a couple times a week, but he hasn't been playing competitively."

There were a couple of areas in which Morse played to his strengths: his serve and forehand.

"Those are weapons for him, and he really used them," said Inn. "He was hitting some aces, and when he had a chance, he really hit his forehand hard, really went after it. For someone who hasn't played much, you'd think he'd be a little bit more timid. But he went after it."

In his other matches, Morse downed fourth-seeded Nicholas Kamisar, 4-6, 6-2, 10-3, in the semifinals, and in the opening round, he defeated Aaron Dieguez, 6-0, 6-1.
