Michael Davis of Jacksonville won the top prize in the latest Oregon Outdoors entry contest — a $500 shopping spree at Rogue Ski Shop in Medford.

Davis, 40, a pediatrician, is an avid backcountry skier who loves alpine touring. The sport allows skiers to walk up snowy hills using skins on their skis while their heels remain free. When they get to the top, they click into special bindings and head downhill.

His online entry form also listed mountain biking, camping, backpacking and hunting as his other outdoor interests.

"I actually just went hunting for the first time," he says.

Davis says he's looking forward to spending his new-found loot, but on what he doesn't know just yet. "It'll obviously be something for skiing," he laughed.

Katelyn Brandon of Talent, an 18-year-old snowboarding instructor at the Mount Ashland ski area, won the second-place prize, a $250 shopping spree at Jack's Board House in Phoenix.
