CAVE JUNCTION — Roger Hults proved clutch down the stretch and William Crowl provided a big defensive lift as Illinois Valley knocked fifth-ranked Phoenix out of first-place in the Skyline Conference boys standings Friday night.

Illinois Valley got scoring from just four players, but the Cougars ended a long drought against the Pirates with 59-57 home victory.

The Phoenix loss combined with Henley's victory over North Valley dropped the Pirates (12-5, 5-2 Skyline) out of a tie for first in the Skyline with the Hornets.

"It was our biggest win of the season," said Illinois Valley first-year coach Jeff Winters. "It's probably the first time we've beaten Phoenix in about seven years."

Hults, a freshman guard, scored a team-best 16 points and was 5 of 7 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help the Cougars (9-7, 3-4 Skyline) preserve their lead.

"(Hults) is a pressure ballplayer," said Winters. "It was one of his better games. He penetrated to the bucket and dished the ball and didn't turn the ball over."

Crowl, a 6-foot-5 senior post, scored 14 points and pulled in seven rebounds. But more important was Crowl's defense on Phoenix big man Mike Shepherd, who was held to just three points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

"(Crowl) fronted (Shepherd) in the low post," said Winters. "He wouldn't let Shepherd get the ball."

Illinois Valley held a 10-point lead in the final period and Phoenix was forced to foul, but the Cougars made 13 of 18 from the line.

Phoenix's Neal Emerson led all scorers with 17 points, while teammates Andrew George and Codey Barrett contributed 13 each.
