The Pirates' twin towers combined for 38 points and 20 rebounds as fifth-ranked Phoenix romped to a 72-39 Skyline Conference boys victory.

"That's the strength of our team," said Phoenix coach Brian Miller. "Those guys are playing well. It's no secret we are going to go down to them."

The victory moves Phoenix (13-5, 6-2 Skyline) into a three-way tie for first in the conference standings with Henley and Hidden Valley.

The Pirates jumped out to a 14-0 lead and built a 37-10 halftime margin.

"It was about effort and playing hard and executing," said Miller. "Tonight that was our emphasis."

Pirate point guard Andrew George had an effective game with five points, five assists, four rebounds and just one turnover.

For North Valley, Kevin Rose had nine points and Brady Brummett added eight.

ILLINOIS VALLEY 65, ROGUE RIVER 37 — At Rogue River, Illinois Valley bolted to a big lead early and cruised behind Steven Paul's 24 points.

Kevin Snook scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Cougars (10-7, 4-4 Skyline). William Crowl added eight points and seven rebounds.

Carson Frantz scored 16 for the Chieftains (3-14, 1-7 Skyline).

HENLEY 42, HIDDEN VALLEY 38 — At Klamath Falls, Henley made key free throws down the stretch in a game between two teams with co-No. 7 state rankings and two teams that now share first place with Phoenix in the Skyline.

Both teams, along with Phoenix, are 6-2 in league.

Henley's Winston Mueller and Danny Staats each made two free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the win.

Mueller scored 21 points and had five rebounds as the Hornets improved to 13-5 overall.

PHOENIX 51, NORTH VALLEY 30 — At Merlin, junior Chelsea Passante registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Phoenix (11-7, 6-2 Skyline).

Passante also had five assists.

The Pirates led by nine points at halftime then outscored North Valley 20-3 in the third quarter to take command.

Phoenix sophomore point guard Kelsey George tallied a game-high 13 points and dished out three assists. Senior Kayla George gave the Pirates a big boost off the bench with eight points and five rebounds.

Phoenix posted a 42-28 advantage on the boards.
