KLAMATH FALLS — The Henley girls won seven of 11 events in their own Henley Freeze swim meet at the Oregon Tech pool on Saturday.

KLAMATH FALLS — The Henley girls won seven of 11 events in their own Henley Freeze swim meet at the Oregon Tech pool on Saturday.

Henley's Melinda Duran clocked 2:20.56 in the 200-yard freestyle and 1:21.5 in the 100 butterfly, both good for wins, while teammate Stephanie North raced to victories in the 50 free (27.66) and 100 free (59.56).

Crater's Anya Martinez won two races for Crater. She took the 200 individual medley (2:40.12) and 100 breaststroke (1:23.18).

The Comets bagged four events on the boys side.

Kyle Kinser and Jeremy Selland each had individual victories and helped Crater's 200 medley and 400 free relay teams to wins.

Kinser timed 58.5 in the 100 free and Selland finished in 4:39.56 in the 500 free.

Wrestling

COTTAGE GROVE INVITATIONAL — At Cottage Grove, after a slow start, North Medford regrouped to finish seventh in the 28-team event.

Illinois Valley crowned two champions and finished second to winner Cascade of Turner. Cascade totaled 1751/2 points, while Illinois Valley scored 1701/2. North Medford amassed 82 points with a top-10 performance. South Medford finished 11th with 65 points and Hidden Valley placed 14th (54).

Illinois Valley champions were Sam Winter (140) and Jerod Miller (152). The Cougars got a second-place from Jacob Miller (145).

The Black Tornado had a trio of wrestlers finish third: sophomores Ryan Mahoney (145), Cory Haggans (152) and Mark Dickison (160). North's other top placers were freshman Jesse Hornbrook (5th, 125) and junior Kade Peden (5th, 171).

South Medford received third-place finishes from juniors Steven Lines (119) and Zach Snyder (125). Rob Switzer (160) finished fifth for the Panthers.

CRATER 12TH — Crater placed 12th in the Reser's Tournament of Champions at Liberty High, scoring 71.5 points.

Newberg won with 193 points, followed by Hermiston with 142.5 and Canby with 139.

There were 23 Oregon high school teams of varying classifications and 87 placers from last season's state tournaments.

The Comets didn't crown any individual champions. Brock Gutches and Brandon Hesse each made it to the semifinals before falling.

Gutches, a runner-up in the Class 5A state meet last year, faced another returning second-place finisher, 6A Canby's Travis Newton, in the 145-pound semifinals. Newton won, 5-3.

Gutches led 3-1 in the third period when he was called for stalling after forcing Newton from the mat with 31 seconds remaining. After the reset, Newton escaped to tie the score with 12 seconds left, then shot in for a takedown for the deciding points.

Hesse made it to the semifinals in the 285-pound bracket by defeating the top seed, but he was pinned by Tillamook's Bubba Owens, the defending Class 4A state champion, in 27 seconds. Owens went on to win the division.

Hockey

NORTH MEDFORD 10, CRATER 1 — North Medford had five players with two goals each and scored four times in the second period at The RRRink.

Trevor Heinsohn and Jared McClure each had two goals and combined for seven assists for the Black Tornado, which had five more goals in the final period.

Only one goal got past the glove of North Medford goalie Steven Cole. He had 21 saves on the night.

North Medford's Sierra Chiverton also had two goals and a helper, while teammates Cameron Myers and Nolan Robbins each found the back of the net twice.
