John F. Nitzel

John F. Nitzel, passed away at his home in Medford, on January 25, 2008. Born in 1919 in Newark, New Jersey, and schooled in nearby Maplewood; he enjoyed participation in Sea Scouts, various sports and outdoor activities as a boy. As a young man, he met the one and only love of his life, Joyce P. Hundley in 1941 and they were married on June 13, 1942. Their family grew over the next few years with the addition of a daughter Carole, a son, Jack, a daughter, Jeannette, and then a son, Peter. A toolmaker by trade, John worked for various industries in New Jersey and Vermont, until his retirement to Medford, Oregon in 1985.

He was first and foremost a family man, and a much beloved brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. John was known as a very hard worker and was acknowledged by all as being extremely gifted with his hands. He was active in church and community affairs and was always the first in line to volunteer to do whatever needed to be done, whether acting as a Boy Scout Leader or a Reserve Police Officer, repairing something for a loved one or traveling with a group of teens to a Mexican orphanage to build a church.

Upon his retirement, John became a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also took up golf and would entertain anyone with stories about his adventures on the golf course. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing, camping and traveling. In recent years, he enjoyed restoring a 1929 Model A, which lead to his involvement with a local car club, Rogue Valley A's.

John was preceded in death by his parents and, one short year ago, by his wife, Joyce. He is survived by his sister, Marguerite Kincaid; his children, Carole, Jack, Jeannette, Peter and their spouses; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. John will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. He lived life completely and to its fullest. He will be remembered fondly for his quick wit, humor and kindness.
