After receiving numerous complaints from retailers and visitors downtown, the Medford Urban Renewal Agency has reined in its parking enforcement.

Action Security Inc., a company that took over patrolling downtown parking last summer, has been instructed to pull back on issuing citations for parking over lines and parking with expired license tags, and to focus on cars exceeding time limits, said Jackie Rodgers, MURA's executive director.

"Their time needs to be spent on more critical areas," she said, adding that they've been instructed to issue parking line and license tag violations only when they're blatant.

Rodgers doesn't fault the company — it had reviewed city codes and was enforcing them. Rodgers said MURA meets with Action weekly, and today outlined specific enforcement rules for the company.

"We've modified their over zealousness," she said.
