The state plans a free workshop in Medford today to help elderly people learn to avoid scams.

It begins at 1:15 p.m. at the Smullin Center at Rogue Valley Medical Center, 2825 E. Barnett Road. It's open to the public.

Representatives of the Department of Consmer and Business Services will explain how to avoid scams, recognize predatory marketing techniques used by insurance agents and security brokers, and choose suitable insurance and financial products.

The workshop is part of the department's senior and family education program on insurance and financial issues. It is co-sponsored by Senior and Disability Services of Rogue Valley Council of Governments.
