CAVE JUNCTION — An ex-convict from Utah was arrested Wednesday and charged with the murder of a Cave Junction woman whose body was found in her home last week.

Louis Grady Jose Coffey, 35, was taken into custody by Josephine County sheriff's deputies and Oregon State Police after a car he was riding in was stopped on Redwood Highway near milepost 16.

Neighbors called the Josephine County Sheriff's Department at about 9:15 p.m. Thursday to report finding Shelley Marie Croft, 38, unconscious on the floor of her motor home in the 200 block of Aries Lane. Deputies and emergency medical crews responded and pronounced Croft dead with a gunshot wound to her chest.

Coffey was living with Croft in the motor home at the time of her death. He reportedly shot her with a sawed-off shotgun, officials said.

Neighbors told investigators they said they heard someone yelling for help and went to check on her, but she was already dead.

Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson said this is the second homicide his department has investigated this year. Last year the agency handled four homicide cases.

Anyone with information about the case can call the sheriff's department's major crime unit at 474-5153 or the department's confidential tip line at 474-5160.
