The Medford Parks and Recreation Department on Thursday released a list of 24 tournaments slated for the new softball-baseball complex at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

The first official event at the $6.8 million state-of-the-art facility is a grand opening event tentatively set for May 9-10 featuring adult slowpitch softball teams and youth baseball or fastpitch softball squads from around the Rogue Valley.

The all-weather, artificial-turf fields will be one of the sites for the Rogue Valley Cup soccer tournament Memorial Day weekend, and the Amateur Softball Association Tune-up Tournament — the first of 13 ASA- or USSSA-sanctioned adult softball tourneys — is set for the following weekend.

The park will host the 2008 ASA 16-A girls fastpitch state tourney July 11-13, the facility's first state bid. Two weeks later, organizers anticipate the ASA men's and women's D/E state tourneys will attract as many as 50 teams to Medford.

The City of Medford will operate five Junior Baseball of Oregon tournaments at the five-field complex between May and October, while the Rogue Valley Senior Softball Association is planning a 36-team tournament in late September.

In addition to the busy tournament slate, Medford Parks and Recreation adult softball leagues — Oregon's second-largest city-run softball operation — begin the spring-summer season with 15 games at USCCP each weeknight, starting May 5.
