The Panthers earned the No. 1 seed and a bye entering today's single elimination portion of the tournament. South plays at 11 a.m.

South defeated Wooster (Nev.) in the opening game 2-0, defeated host Anderson (Calif.) 10-2 in the second game, and finished the day with a 5-1 win over Shasta (Calif.).

Against Wooster, once the four-time Nevada state champions, freshman Ashleigh Hawkins put South on the board with a two-run double in the fourth inning while juniors Jessica Mondale and Dominique Newman combined to hold Wooster to just four hits in the game. Senior right fielder Rocky Hiett was 2-for-2 for South.

The Panthers scored six runs in the second inning against Anderson in the second game to take command. Junior Samantha Matarese was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, sophomore Camille Smith was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and junior Whitney James was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Newman pitched a one-hitter in the third game against Shasta, striking out 11 and walking only one. Josie Walker was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Hawkins was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Mallory Tacdol was 2-for-3 with a double.

GRANTS PASS ALSO SWEEPS — At Redding, Calif., Grants Pass won its first three games of the Cubs Classic.

The Cavers beat Paradise 2-0, Yreka 16-0 and River Valley 6-0.

PHOENIX 6, MARSHALL 5 — At Talent, Marshall took a 5-2 lead with four runs in the top of the sixth, but Phoenix responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the nonconference victory at Colver Field.

Phoenix (1-4) went ahead when, with the bases loaded, senior first baseman Miranda Barajas hit a base-clearing double.

Barajas was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. The Pirates' junior shortstop Carlee Storey was 1-for-2 with a double and two stolen bases.

Junior pitcher Tessa Lockett earned the win, working seven innings with six strikeouts, four hits, and no walks.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN SWEEPS COQUILLE — Leah Weakley and Amber Sekreta combined for 14 strikeouts as Cascade Christian swept a doubleheader from Coquille, 14-3 and 14-4. The opening game was designated as a Sunset Conference contest.

Weakley fanned eight while allowing five hits in the opener, while Sekreta followed by striking out six and allowing five hits in the second game.

Erin Guthrie went 3-for-4, while Brandi Johnson, Bre Luzny, Andi Vondra had two hits for the Challengers (4-2, 1-0 Sunset). Cascade Christian also benefitted from 17 walks in the nightcap. Coquille is 0-2 in Sunset Conference play.

The Challengers travel to North Valley for a doubleheader today.

BUTTE FALLS 5, LAKEVIEW 0 — At Butte Falls, senior pitcher Bobbie Ross tossed a one-hitter to lead Butte Falls to the District 5 win.

Ross struck out eight and Lakeview's lone hit came on Teri Pardue's single in the fourth.

Butte Falls (4-1, 1-0 District 5) was led by a trio of hitters going 2-for-3 from the plate in Cheyenna Kirkpatrick, Brianna Wright, and Samantha Lass.
