On Feb. 19, the Medford Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1833 and its Ladies Auxiliary hosted an awards dinner for the annual winners of the Voice of Democracy Patriots Pen essay contests.

On Feb. 19, the Medford Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1833 and its Ladies Auxiliary hosted an awards dinner for the annual winners of the Voice of Democracy Patriots Pen essay contests.

Winner of the Voice of Democracy contest was Jake Moran of North Medford High School, who also placed second in District, winning a total of $250.

Winners of the Patriots Pen essay, all from Hedrick Middle School, were: First place, Liberty Parnell, who also won first place in District and fifth place in the state, winning a total of $500. Second place was Kadan Schneider, winning $75, and third place was Mikaela Wright winning $50.

Each year, the VFW holds a contest for local middle school and high school students who can win up to $30,000 at the national level.
