No, it isn't winter break this week, not even with a weather forecast that predicts up to a foot of new snow in the mountains by the weekend and even a bit near the valley floor.

The National Weather Service has issued a snow advisory for today for much of southwest Oregon, including the Medford and Ashland areas. It remains in effec until 11 tonight.

The advisory says a front will move into the area this afternoon and evening, bringing 1 to 4 inches of snow to areas 2,000 feet and above, about the elevation of Ashland. Little or no accumulation is expected in Medford, forecasters say, although some snow may fall.

The snow could affect freeway passes to the north, which top out at about 2,000 feet, and the Siskiyous to the south on Interstate 5. Snow also is possible Thursday, and then temperatures are predicted to rise slightly.
