Temple Emek Shalom invites classical music lovers to two concerts in April. The first will feature Cleveland Duo with James Umble at 8 p.m. Friday, April 4, at the temple, 1800 E. Main St., Ashland.

Established in 1980, The Cleveland Duo combines with saxophonist Umble to form a trio with an unusual combination of violins piano, and saxophone. The repertoire ranges through a variety of traditional and familiar genres.

The threesome's CD, "Dejeuner sur l'Herbe," received five Grammy nominations in 1993, including best chamber music disc.

The program will include music of Bartok, Schubert, Evan Chambers, John Adams, Jean-Luc Ponty, Srul Irving Glick, Maurice Ravel, Darius Milhaud and other works.

The second concert will feature violinist Elmar Oliveira, pianist Robert Koenig and violist Sandra Robbins at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 9.

Oliveira is the first and only American violinist to win the Gold Medal at Moscow's Tchaikovsky International Competition and the first to receive the Avery Fisher Prize, in addition to capturing first prizes at the Naumburg International Competition and the G. B. Dealey Competition.

Robbins is the principal violist of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra and a member of the American Composers Orchestra, and The Westchester Philharmonic. She has taught viola and chamber music on the faculties of Cornell, SUNY Geneseo and Syracuse University in New York.

Pianist Koenig performs regularly in major centers throughout the world. His most recent CD of transcriptions for viola and piano by William Primrose was released in July, 2006 on Naxos with violist Roberto Diaz, and was nominated for "Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without orchestra)" at the 49th annual Grammy Awards in 2007.

Individual tickets are $26 for adults and $5 for ages 22 and younger. Adult tickets for both concerts are $45. See emekshalom.org or call 482-8172.
