North Medford track and field coach Pieter Voskes best summed up Tuesday's dual meet between the Black Tornado and South Medford.

"This was a character-building meet," Voskes said.

Battling through a consistent stiff wind at Bowerman Field and fatigue from a loaded April schedule, the North boys defeated South 81-64 and the South girls defeated North 80-65.

"The wind won the day," South coach Bill Rowan said with a laugh. "It was sort of survival of the fittest today."

The North boys earned the victory despite holding out a number of key contributors either to injury or for rest.

The Black Tornado received a pair of victories from steady senior sprinter Almeir Barlow in the 100 meters (12 seconds) and 200 (23.42) and senior Richard Zhu in the 800 (2:03) and in the 3,000 (9:27.0).

"Richard had a great day today," Voskes said. "He's a senior. He sees it's quickly ending and realizes it's his last shot, his last hurrah. He's a very focused young man."

Issac Silafau and Taylor Stormberg had strong days in the field. Silafau won the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 81/2 inches and the triple jump in 39-111/2.

Stormberg cleared 12 feet in the pole vault.

"I'm pretty proud of our development," Voskes said. "I think we are evolving into the team we are capable of being. We are getting points from kids we may not have expected in the beginning."

The South girls puts their depth in the distance events on display to earn the victory. Piper Delaney won the 1,500 in 5:08.83 and teammates Tayler Harrington (5:22.20) and Kelsey Bradshaw (5:27.0) finished second and third, respectively.

Delaney also ran by herself, finishing in 11:13, to win the 3,000 ahead of Bradshaw in 12:01.

"It was really slow today," said Delaney, who owns the top Southwest Conference marks in the 1,500 (4:54.71) and 3,000 (10:35.8). "I wasn't planning on going very fast, I just wanted to get points for our team."

The Panthers also swept the 800, led by Ali Kelly's time of 2:28.

In the field, South's Rebecca Viets won the triple jump with a mark of 34-33/4 and Nicole Bowden had an impressive showing in the discus, considering the wind, with a throw of 114-6. Bowden also won the shot put with a mark of 33-1.

"I think things will be different in terms of quality marks when we get toward districts," Rowan said. "All the kids are tired because of all the meets we've had in April."

The North girls were led by Kate Folsom and Baylee Hearns.

Folsom earned victories in four events for the Tornado, including the 100 hurdles (17.10) and 300 hurdles (49.70). She also ran legs on North's winning 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay teams along with Hearns, who also had victories in the 100 and 200.

Hearns, just a sophomore, has the top 100 and 200 marks in the SWC and Voskes said she's "one of the best sprinters around."

She used Tuesday as a prep for the Oregon Relays this Friday and Saturday at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, where she'll meet Summit sophomore Kellie Schueler.

Schueler narrowly edged Hearns in the 100 and 200 at the Roseburg Twilight meet and Hearns is looking forward to the rematch.

"She's the fastest girl in the state," Hearns said. "She got me last time and it was close so hopefully it's going to me this time."

Mitch Singler and Stephen Lankford had productive days for the South boys. Singler took first in the 400 in 51.77 and ran a strong third leg in the Panthers' 4x100 relay victory. South finished in 44.85, just ahead of North's squad at 45.85.

"That's sort of a mild upset because North has a very good sprint relay team as well," Rowan said.

Lankford, the top SWC discus thrower, took first in dominating fashion with a throw of 151-2 — 22 feet ahead of the second-place finisher.
