Eugene E. Konopasek

Eugene E."Gene" Konopasek, 84, beloved husband and

father, died peacefully at home on April 22, 2008, following a long illness. He was surrounded by family at the time of his death.

Gene was born February 20, 1924, in Verdigre, Neb., to Frank and Pauline Konopasek. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Merchant Marines in the early days of World War II. Upon completing officer's candidate school, Lieutenant Konopasek served as engineering officer aboard several troop transports in the Pacific war theater, including the USS Simon Buckner and the USS General Greeley. His tour of duty during the war took him to many of the Pacific island battlefields, including the Philippines, New Guinea, the Marshall Islands, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima. In addition, he also served briefly in the Atlantic war theater.

Gene married Elaine Greenwall, of Wausau, Neb. on June 27, 1944. After his discharge from the service, the couple settled in the Rogue Valley. Gene worked in the lumber industry

until the mid-1960's, retiring as foreman of Double Dee

Lumber Company. The couple then purchased Sir Loin's Steak House, in Medford, Ore., eventually adding another restaurant in Klamath Falls. The couple permanently retired in the mid-1980's.

Gene had many interests, although none more passionate than fishing. Any species, any habitat, from Mexico to

Alaska, he was always ready to cast a line. To illustrate Gene's passion for fishing, his family found a shore pass from WWII in a scrapbook stating that Lt. Konopasek was going ashore with "a seaman's bag and a fishing pole."

He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Elaine Konopasek, brother, Frank Konopasek, of Eagle Point, Ore., sisters; Neva Nelson, of Eagle Point, Ore., and Carolyn Kyle, of Clarksville, Tenn. He also leaves behind his children, Joan Novosad and husband, Ray of Eagle Point, Ore., Dean Konopasek and wife, Kate of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ann Gressett, of Central Point, Ore. He leaves behind seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Clifford Konopasek, Duane Konopasek, and Robert Konopasek.

His presence on this earth will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Rogue Valley Hospice (2960 Doctors Parkway, Medford, OR 97504). Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 28, 2008, at Conger~Morris Funeral Home in Medford. He will be laid to rest at the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Eagle Point, Ore.
