Garden fans' big event of the season starts today at the Jackson County Exposition Park in Central Point.

The annual Master Gardeners Spring Fair opens at 9 this morning at the Compton Arena in the Expo Park at 1 Peninger Road. Admission is $2 at the door (kids 12 and younger get in free). It's open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday as well.

Information booths dot the fair, but the biggest draws are the annuals, perennials, veggie starts and trees and shrubs brought in for sale by area growers.

Also planned are classes, including these today: 10:30 a.m., culinary herbs; 11:30 a.m., rock garden gems and trough gardening; 1 p.m., craft garden; 2 p.m., tomatoes; 3 p.m., selecting a home greenhouse; 4 p.m., collapse of bee colonies. Classes are free after garden fair admission.

Proceeds from the event go for educational programs operated by the Master Gardeners Association.
