North Medford advanced two singles players and a pair of doubles teams through to today's championship finals of the North Medford-Ashland Invitational at North Medford Courts.

The Black Tornado leads the eight-team tournament with 84 points heading into today's finale. Summit is second with 72 points and Barlow is third with 48.

North Medford's top-seeded doubles tandem of David Longmire and Tanner Borg won two matches Friday to advance, while No. 1 singles player Austin Schoenlein, No. 3 singles competitor Nathan Dines and the No. 4 doubles team of Andrew Walkup and Grant Anderson also moved on to today's finals.

Championship matches begin at 9 a.m.

Schoenlein needed a 7-4 advantage in tiebreaker to get past semifinal opponent Chase Thomet of Churchill, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Schoenlein also defeated Bend's Jeff Windser, 6-3, 6-1 in a quarterfinal match.

Borg and Longmire cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Josh Williamson and Kevin Walker of Newberg, then downed Churchill's Matt Walker and Mathias Newell, 6-0, 6-3, in the semifinals.

Ashland advanced its No. 3 doubles squad of Clint Gorbett and Alex Harris to the finals. The Grizzlies' No. 4 doubles team of Josh and Nathan Harris will play at 8 this morning with a championship berth on the line.

SWC Softball

GRANTS PASS 4-11, SHELDON 0-1 — At Grants Pass, sixth-ranked Grants Pass got strong pitching performances from sophomore Morgan Barnes and senior Chelsey Chamberlain and Tara Glover provided an offensive spark in each game.

Barnes struck out 10 and walked three to run her record to 9-2 with a one-hit shutout in the opener. Chloe Buerstatte's single to begin the sixth inning was Sheldon's only hit off Barnes.

Glover's two-run single fueled a three-run rally in the second inning.

Karleigh Prestianni had two hits and one RBI for the Cavers (16-2, 4-1 SWC).

In Game 2, Chamberlain picked up her seventh victory in seven decisions with a seven strikeout, one walk effort. Chamberlain helped her cause with a double and solo home.

Glover pounded two hits and drove in three runs, while Barnes smacked a pair of solo home runs.

GOLD BEACH 18-11, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2-3 — Katherine Zuber belted two home runs to lead Gold Beach to a doubleheader sweep from host Cascade Christian.

Zuber ripped a two-out grand slam in the fifth inning of Game 2 to highlight Gold Beach's seven-hit attack.

In Game 1, Gold Beach piled up 15 hits and scored in every inning of the five-inning Sunset League contest.

Nikki Jones had two hits in the nonleague nightcap for the Challengers (5-4 Sunset League) and hit a two-run double in the sixth inning.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 5-13, GOLD BEACH 2-5 — At White City, Jeremy Cheney and Ryan Pech combined for a three-hitter for Cascade Christian in the conference-counting opener.

Cheney (4-2) allowed one hit, struck out four and walked six in the three innings, while Pech gave up four hits and struck out eight in relief. Both Gold Beach runs were unearned.

Wes Litton doubled and scored two runs for the Challengers (11-8, 6-3 Sunset). Jordan Banks and Ryder West added doubles and Pech drove in two runs.

In the nonconference second game, Taylor Thomas went 2-2, walked twice and scored three runs for the Challengers. Cascade freshman Jarrett Artale contributed two hits and scored twice.

Track and Field

OREGON RELAYS — At Eugene, Phoenix High junior Elliott Jantzer set a state-best time in winning the 3,000 meter run at Hayward Field.

Jantzer's time of 8 minutes, 37.60 seconds is a lifetime best in the event and the second-fastest in school history.

Crater's Josh Elliott and Zach Elliott finished fifth and sixth respectively and North Medford sophomore Drew Jordan placed eighth (9:00.66). Josh Elliott, a sophomore, posted a time of 8:51.35, while his brother, a junior, came in at 8:52.39.

The Ashland boys distance medley relay team won the event with a mark of 10:39.96. The team was comprised of Ryland Karlovich Jr., Josh Hogeland, Tucker Bacon and Matt Miner.

In the boys 3,000 steeplechase, Crater's Jarrod Puckett placed second (10:14.75) and teammate Ryan Santana tied for fourth (10:25.06).

In the boys pole vault, North Medford sophomore David Formolo finished sixth with a lifetime best 13-feet. It was the second all-time mark at North Medford.

The meet continues today.

Boys Golf

JUNCTION CITY INVITATIONAL — At Monroe, Crater's four scoring golfers broke 100 for the second time this year as the Comets finished seventh in the nine-team field at the par-72 Diamond Woods Golf Club.

Taylor Huschka of Sweet Home captured medalist honors with a 79 and Tillamook won the team title.

Freshman Jon Williams carded a team-low score of 94, while sophomore Derrick Taylor shot a 99 to break the century mark for the first time this season.

Crater's Luke Boskovich won the long-drive contest, hitting a 3-wood 275 yards.
