Taylor Schmidt put together her two best performances of the season and North Medford earned its first two Southwest Conference victories with a doubleheader sweep of South Medford on Saturday at North Medford High.

Schmidt, a junior, struck out 14 and walked only two in a 3-1 victory in Game 1 and posted 10 strikeouts and walked just one in a 4-0 Game 2 victory. She gave up just three total hits and is now 6-6 for North (6-9, 2-6 SWC).

"Today was definitely her best outing of the season," North coach Mike Mayben said. "When she's able to hit her spots, she can be pretty good."

South's only run came in the first inning of Game 1 but Schmidt sent the Panthers (4-11, 0-8) down in order in the final six innings. She never faced more than four batters in any inning of Game 2.

"She just settled down and was really focused," Mayben said. "And she got some run support, which gave her a little more confidence. That made a big difference."

Bri Williams was 2-for-3 in the first game and Tejay Schmidt, Taylor's sister, was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. The Black Tornado scored three runs in the fourth inning, two coming on a two-out single from Tejay Schmidt.

North scored all its runs in the second inning of Game 2. McKenna Storey was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Tejay Schmidt was 1-for-2, including an RBI triple.

"The biggest thing is we strung together hits in the same inning," Mayben said. "We had innings without any hits, which is OK if we can string them together. We can live with that."
