LA GRANDE — Southern Oregon University's softball team watched its playoff hopes slip away in dramatic fashion as it lost both ends of a doubleheader for the second day in a row, losing at Eastern Oregon, 7-2, 3-2, Saturday.

The Raiders nearly rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the top of the seventh inning of the nightcap.

With two outs and two on, the Raiders' Alicia Caudill and Ricci Coultas had back-to-back RBI singles to cut the EOU lead to 3-2. Christa Simon almost pushed the tying run across with a single to the shortstop, but Caudill was thrown out at the plate.

In the opener, the Mountaineers jumped out early and the Raiders never threatened afterwards.

SOU entered weekend play in third place in the Cascade Conference, which would be good enough to earn a spot in the NAIA Regional Tournament in Klamath Falls. Instead, after being swept at College of Idaho on Friday and again at Eastern on Saturday, the Raiders dropped to 10-12 in league play and fell to sixth in the standings.

SOU closes its regular season next Friday against league champion Oregon Tech at University Field.
