The race for Jackson County clerk will continue in the November general election after none of the five candidates received enough votes tonight to win the race outright.

With 78 percent of the vote counted late tonight, Chris Walker had collected 44 percent, enough to ensure her name will appear on the November ballot.

One candidate would have had to have collected 50 percent to win the position without a November runoff.

It was far from clear tonight who Walker’s opponent would be. Cheryl Avgeris, with 6,100 votes, Colleen Roberts, with 5,906, and Karen Spoonts, with 5,620, all are possibilities.

“I had hoped to get to 50 percent and have it be over,” Walker said. “It was a personal goal because I put a lot into this election.”
