WILSONVILLE — Cascade Christian had its run in the Class 3A baseball state playoffs cut short Wednesday when the Challengers came up shy during a seventh-inning rally at Wilsonville High School.

Trailing Rainier 8-3 in a first-round game rescheduled from Tuesday, Cascade Christian put up three runs in the top of the seventh but could go no further in an 8-6 loss.

"We battled back, but we just gave up too many hits and runs before that," said Challengers coach Paul Sha.

Jeremy Cheney helped keep Cascade Christian (16-11) in the game, belting a solo home run in the fourth inning and adding a two-run shot in the fifth for his only homers on the season.

Wes Litton earned a one-out single to get the Challengers going in the seventh. After Cheney was intentionally walked and Ryan Pech struck out, Rider West reached safely on an error by the Rainier shortstop.

Jordan Banks then reached on another error at shortstop, and Colton Cochran followed with a two-run single to make it 8-6. But on that same play, Banks was thrown out at third base for the game-ending out.

Pech struck out seven and held Rainier scoreless until the fourth inning, while Litton and Brandon Hauser each joined Cheney in getting two hits for the Challengers.

RAINIER 11, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 4 — At Wilsonville, Amanda Kinney drove in three runs and finished with two hits, but it was not enough as Cascade Christian fell in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs.

With the Challengers trailing 11-1 in the fifth inning, Kinney doubled with the bases loaded to narrow the deficit to seven. Cascade Christian, however, could get no closer.

Rainier scored seven runs in the second inning, led by leadoff hitter Molly Schwegler's two RBIs. Cascade Christian (12-15) had all three of its errors in the inning.
