Two Jackson County students have been named National Merit Scholarship winners.

Cody S. Nelson, of Gold Hill, and Paul D. Henderson, of Medford, were among 2,800 scholarship winners announced this week by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Nelson is a student at St. Mary's School in Medford and plans to attend the University of Southern California to study biomedical engineering.

Henderson is a student at Cascade Christian High School and plans to attend Pepperdine University. He plans to study history and teach.

The scholarships provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. Another group of scholarship winners will be announced in July, bringing the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2008 competition to about 4,600.
