ROSEBURG — Roseburg's sixth-ranked baseball team wasn't shaken by Lake Oswego's quick strike on Friday, but some deficits are too large to overcome.

The Indians trimmed an eight-run deficit to three, but their rally fell short as the Lakers prevailed 11-8 in the Class 6A state quarterfinals.

Facing a 9-1 deficit, Roseburg (19-6) regrouped to plate five runs in the bottom of the fourth, sparked by Vince Ampi's two-run double.

From there, scoring opportunities were plentiful for the Indians but they couldn't overcome the clutch pitching of the Lakers.

"We were able to get some runners on base and got some opportunities to score," said Roseburg coach Troy Thompson. "We had lots of chances in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but just couldn't take advantage. Their pitcher was very effective. Lake Oswego is a good club and they did a good job today."

The ninth-ranked Lakers inflated their lead back up to five with two more runs in the sixth inning. They later ended the game by forcing a double play to get out of a bases-loaded jam.

Mitch Huff supplied Roseburg's first run with a solo home run in the third inning.

Roseburg pitcher Brandon Jackson (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, while Ampi, Boone Farrington, A.J. Royal and Derek Priestley all had two hits for the Indians.

Lake Oswego's Michael Wesner belted a three-run home run to give the Lakers a 7-0 lead in the second inning. Wesner went 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
