After four months heading up Medford's planning department as interim director, Bianca Petrou stepped down Tuesday. Bill Hoke, the city's economic development director, will step in as interim planning director.

"Bianca expressed to Bill and I weeks ago that she did not want to be in that position much longer," said Mike Dyal, city manager. "We responded to what was desired."

Petrou has returned to her position as assistant planning director.

Dyal said Hoke will be spending most of his time in the planning department, but his role will be primarily administrative.

"He's not a planner per se but he is an administrator," Dyal said, adding that he will be relying on the planning staff to provide professional services.

Meanwhile, the nationwide search to fill the full-time planning director position continues.

"Letters were sent to planning directors and planning officials in 23 states," Dyal said. "We've got a few applicants and we're seeing if we can get some interviews in June."

The former director, Rob Scott, retired January 15 after seven years in the position.

Phone calls to Petrou and Hoke seeking comment were not immediatley returned.
