Springtime at Southern Oregon University means music. The Department of Music at SOU will present four concerts Friday through Sunday, June 6-8, in the Music Recital Hall on the SOU campus.

Things get started with the SOU Guitar Ensembles at 8 p.m. Friday, June 6. The concert will feature music for guitar ensemble stretching from a J.S. Bach Brandenburg concerto, a Tchaikovsky symphony, a Vivaldi concerto, jazz compositions to standard classical guitar repertoire by Albeniz, Torroba and York.

SOU music majors will play solos by Leo Brouwer, Jose Luis Merlin, Dusan Bogdanovich, Andrew York, Johannes Pachelbel, and many other classical guitar composers.

The SOU Guitar Quartet will play acoustic jazz-fusion music by junior guitar major David Kelley, and Andrew York's "Quiccan," originally written for the LA Guitar Quartet. Also on the program will be orchestral music by Tchaikovsky and J.S. Bach. Closing the concert will be the SOU Guitar Orchestra playing three up-tempo Brazilian pieces by Maxim Diego Pujol. The SOU guitar studio ensembles are directed by David Rogers.

The Jefferson State Choral Coalition will present two performances of its concert "California Dreamin' " at 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday, June 7. The 45-person university/community ensemble will offer a mix of American popular music-standards, barbershop, ballads, 40s swing, 50s to 70s rock, gospel, and Broadway. The group is backed up by a live band. Choral teacher, composer, arranger and performer, Kirby Shaw directs the group.

The Southern Oregon University Choirs concert will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 8.

Tickets to each of the concerts are $8 and may be purchased at the SOU music department office, or at the box office prior to the performance. Students with ID and children 12 and under are admitted free.
