A man who raped a west Medford woman and robbed a Medford restaurant was sentenced Friday to 13 years in prison for the Measure 11 crimes.

Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Patricia Crain excoriated Michael Ray Knight, 34, before sentencing him to 13 years in prison in a plea agreement hammered out in March between Knight's attorney, Don Scales, and Senior Deputy District Attorney Tim Barnack.

"You are dangerous. The rape was horrendous and deliberate," said Crain, characterizing Knight as "a scary individual" who thinks only of himself and is a danger to others.

Knight was convicted on a single charge each of first-degree rape and second-degree robbery, as well as three counts of first-degree burglary and being a felon in possession of a weapon. His crime spree took place in 2006.

The plea agreement was reached after prosecutors agreed to drop several lesser charges. Knight will have seven years post-prison supervision after his release. He must also register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, Crain ordered.

The female victims of the rape and robbery have suffered trauma and did not wish to attend Knight's sentencing, Barnack said.

"I really don't have anything positive to say about the defendant," said Barnack. "On a personal level, I don't think it's enough (prison time.)"

Scales said his client had "severe mental health issues," and urged the court to order him to continue mental health evaluations. "This is a very impaired young man," said Scales.

Knight mouthed "I love you" to his family members and appeared to tear up several times during the sentencing.

"I am sorry for the things I did," said Knight. "Some of the things I didn't do. But for the ones I did, I'm very sorry."

"I feel sorry for your daughter and your mother," Crain said. "You're lucky I am following the stipulated sentence."

Knight was arrested by Medford police in Reno, Nev., in fall 2006 on burglary, robbery and rape charges.

Medford police Lt. Tim George said Knight committed six residential burglaries between July 29 and Sept. 15, 2006. Some of the burglaries occurred when the victims were home, George said.

On Aug. 26, 2006, a woman reported that a masked man broke into her home in the 1300 block of Clearwater Drive and raped her twice. During the rape investigation, she told police that Knight, who lived near her at the time, was seen prowling around her residence.

Police also linked Knight to the Sept. 19, 2006, robbery of Marie Callender's Restaurant & Bakery, in which he held a female employee at gunpoint after the restaurant closed.

In all, Knight faced six counts of first-degree burglary, two counts of first-degree rape, four counts of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and second-degree kidnapping.

Medford detectives tracked Knight to Reno, where he was arrested Sept. 29, 2006.
