It's a big weekend for supporters of the American Cancer
Society, which has organized three Relay for Life events in Southern Oregon starting today.

A Relay for Life event begins at 10 a.m. at Southern Oregon University in Ashland and Grants Pass High School and at 2 p.m. at South Medford High School.

Participants in the events take turns walking all night to raise money for cancer research and to celebrate cancer survivors.

In Ashland, SOU President Mary Cullinan speaks at the 10 a.m. opening ceremony of the event, and 28 relay teams will walk the track until 8 a.m. Sunday while local bands provide entertainment. A memorial ceremony begins at 8 tonight.

In Medford, where walkers also will take part in relays until 8 a.m. Sunday, entertainment and food are planned throughout the day today. The third annual Miss-Ter Relay contest will begin at 3 p.m. and a live auction at 7:15 p.m. will benefit Hematology Oncology Associates. A memorial ceremony will begin at dusk

During the Grants Pass event, the memorial ceremony will begin at 9 p.m.
