A remarkable season and career with the Crater Comets ended with another honor for senior Emily Morrill.

A remarkable season and career with the Crater Comets ended with another honor for senior Emily Morrill.

The center fielder was recently named the Class 5A state softball player of the year after guiding the Comets to their second straight state championship. State runner-up Glencoe had the pitcher of the year in Jordyn Brown and coach of the year in Jacy Schmidt.

It was the second consecutive season the Comets had the state's top player, with Haley Hevern earning that honor a season ago.

Morrill, who was also the Southern Sky Conference's top performer, batted .364 with a .625 slugging percentage at the leadoff spot for Crater. The three-year starter also had a team-high 37 runs to go with 13 RBIs.

"It's very well deserved," said Crater coach Chris Arnold of Morrill's honor. "I know Emily always gives her best effort, so it's nice to see when other coaches recognize that."

Joining Morrill on the all-state list for Crater were first-teamers Ashleigh Larson (second base) and Brittany Reeves (pitcher). Sophomore infielder Kayla Hopkinson was named to the third team for the Comets, while senior outfielder Amanda Bates was an honorable mention pick.

Reeves, a junior, finished with a 17-6 record and 1.04 ERA on the mound. She struck out 170 batters — third most in Crater history for a single season — in 1342/3 innings, and she hit .333 with 11 RBIs.

Larson, a senior three-year starter, had team-highs in batting average (.442) and RBIs (24) to go with one home run.

"We were definitely well represented," said Arnold of his all-state competitors. "It was a tremendous year for the kids."

SSC-champion Ashland placed three on the all-state list in third-teamers Bella Pribyl (junior pitcher) and Kylie Cantrell (senior catcher) and honorable mention pick Sarah Silbowitz (junior infielder).

Pribyl, the SSC pitcher of the year, went 20-5 with a 0.72 ERA and 232 strikeouts.

Eagle Point senior first baseman Ashley Josephson was voted to the second team after batting .394 with five homers and 20 RBIs.

Grants Pass and Roseburg divvied up top honors at the 6A level.

Cavers sophomore Tara Glover was voted player of the year after leading GP to the school's first-ever state softball crown. Roseburg hurler Mikayla Endicott was named pitcher of the year and Tom Blanchard, in his first season guiding Grants Pass, was selected coach of the year.

"My gosh, I can't tell you how proud I am of all those girls for the season they had," said Blanchard. "Everyone that understands softball knows we had one of the better teams in the state. Sometimes those (coach of the year) honors go along with having such wonderful athletes. But I'm proud of the honor."

Glover, a two-time Southwest Conference player of the year, batted .442 with five home runs, 39 RBIs, 21 stolen bases and 46 runs.

"Lots of coaches, including myself, use hyperbole in talking about a player," Blanchard said, "but I got to see most of the best players in the state this year and there was not a better player or competitor than Tara. Just competing at the highest of levels under the most intense pressure — nobody comes close to her."

Glover was joined on the all-state list by first-team infielder Karleigh Prestianni (junior), second-team pitcher Morgan Barnes (sophomore) and second-team designated hitter/utility Chelsea Chamberlain (senior).

Endicott, who was last year's pitcher of the year, capped her senior campaign with a 21-4 mark and 0.29 ERA. She also fanned 354 batters, walked just 34 and yielded only 87 hits in 196 innings of work.

North Medford had one all-state competitor in senior infielder Bri Williams, who was selected to the honorable mention list.

In Class 4A, North Valley had one first-team competitor in junior Rachel Conard, while Hidden Valley placed six on the all-state list. Senior pitcher Angie Dangelo, senior catcher Nicole Harris and senior infielders Katie Struffert and Kendra Morgan each made the third team. Senior infielder Destinee Hernandez and sophomore outfielder Danyelle Wise were honorable mention picks.

Marist swept the top individual honors with pitcher Nyree White and infielder Kayla Braud taking home co-player of the year honors. Bob Hammitt was named coach of the year for the Spartans.
