Alfred Gunnar Larson



Alfred G. Larson, 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Medford, Ore., on May 31, 2008. He was born in Seattle, the only child of Katarina Haggstrom and Jons Larsson, both of Sweden. A private graveside service was held Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Acacia Memorial Park in Seattle, Wash. Officiating was the Reverend Father Edward Leche, a childhood and lifelong friend.



Alfred graduated from the University of Washington where he was a member of the Forestry Club and the U.W. Crew. It was here that he met his wife, Barbara J. Andersen. His post-graduate studies were in Oregon at Portland State University and Oregon State University. He served in the 82nd Airborne in Europe as a Private 1st Class, Paratrooper.



Pursuing his love of the outdoors and belief in the proper management of public lands, Alfred spent his entire career with the Department of Interior, BLM, retiring after 35 years and earning two Superior Service Honors, issued in 1964 and 1985. Active in his community, Alfred was elected to the Crook County Budget Board and subsequently was elected to three consecutive terms with the Crook County School Board. He was an Ordained Presbyterian Deacon, lifetime member of the U of W Alumni, Society of American Foresters, Seattle Swedish Club, Uniteers, NASFE/NARFE-PAC, Southern Oregon Historical Society and the Westminster Presbyterian Church.



Alfred enjoyed hiking, rock-hounding, films and was an avid reader. But, most of all, he loved the company of his family and their friends.



Alfred possessed an innate ability to see the good in all people. He was known for his steadfast support, standing up for principles, loyalty and honesty.



Alfred is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Andersen-Larson; daughter, Kristine of Seattle; son-in-law, Richard Gemmell; sons, Jon of Fairbanks and Jeff of Port Townsend; cousins, Anna Hegstrom-Olds of Portland and Eleanor Swanson-Grimstad of Olympia; and extensive Haggstrom and Larsson family in Sweden.
